NZ Walking and Cycling Strategy...

A variety of strategies can be used to reach parents as they teach their children road safety skills.
To communicate with parents try:
  • the School Web site
  • e-mails,
  • newsletters,
  • holding a Traffic Safety Day to promote safe driving, safe walking and safe cycling to school.
  • BOT or PTA members, PEO's and others- distribute fliers and talk to drivers who pick up or drop off children.
  • Walkers and bicyclists are given safety information and incentives at a welcome table as they arrive at the school.
  • Use catchy phraseson the school community noticeboard eg "Give our kids a brake!" "Be nifty, travel at fifty." "Safe driving-dont leave home without it!" "Safe driving is no accident"
  • Use a speed trailer to monitor volume and speed of passing traffic.
  • Use local media-TV, radio, newspapers-to promote road safety awareness especially near your school.
  • Do a mail drop within the school zone, reminding the wider community that school is heading back-be aware!
  • Invite law enforcement such as NZ Police and/or council parking wardens to monitor the before and after school chaos.
